About

What This Site Is

This site tracks legislation in the Iowa 91st General Assembly (2025–2026), covering the Iowa House and Senate. It provides browsable pages for individual bills and legislators, including vote records, bill histories, sponsor information, and legislator voting summaries.

The site is built as a static website using Quarto and R, and is hosted on GitHub Pages.

Data Sources

All legislative data is sourced from LegiScan, a nonpartisan legislative tracking service that aggregates data from state legislatures across the United States. LegiScan provides:

  • Bill metadata — bill numbers, titles, subjects, and current status
  • Bill history — a record of actions taken on each bill (introductions, committee referrals, floor votes, etc.)
  • Roll call votes — individual legislator votes on floor amendments and final passage
  • Legislator profiles — party affiliation, district, and contact information
  • Sponsor relationships — which legislators sponsored or co-sponsored each bill

LegiScan data is accessed via their API. Raw data is stored locally and processed into summaries before the site is rendered.

How Often Data Is Updated

The data pipeline runs automatically every day at midnight CT via a scheduled GitHub Actions workflow. Each run:

  1. Fetches updated data from the LegiScan API
  2. Processes votes and legislator statistics
  3. Re-renders any bill or legislator pages that have changed
  4. Publishes the updated site to GitHub Pages
